Nyolcvan éves a magyar forint. Ennek a magas kornak az első felét szocialista valutaként élte meg, a tervgazdaság korlátai között. A korszak második felét a rendszerváltás sokkja és az EU-integráció megnyíló perspektívája keretezte, de olyan kihívások is, mint a nagy pénzügyi válság és a Covid-19-es recesszió. E hosszú időszak áttekintése során elsősorban azt kell vizsgálni, hogyan töltötte be a forint az egyes pénzfunkciókat. Ugyanakkor az is kiolvasható belőle, hogy a valuta nem egyszerűen pénz, hanem kulturális szimbólum, és az állami szuverenitás kifejezője is.
